For full details of the 2010 live music line up (so far) click here!

For full logistical details for the event click here!

We have titled the festival this year ‘Mi Casa Su Casa’.  This represents our invitation to you to come and celebrate the event at our ‘new’ house in East Brisbane.

We are excited to announce this year’s line-up so far will include the debut of a new Brisbane trio, as well as the return of the popular Melbourne singer songwriter Alexis Nicole.  For the guitar lovers, the flamenco duo ‘The GY Jazz’ will also return who last year left us stunned with their fast finger guitar session.  Musicians donate their time for this event so would appreciate any $ tips you can give.

On the BBQ front, Dave Toomey (Pit Boss) has the BBQ ready to go and two new chefs (both decorated ‘BBQ Pit Bosses’ in their own right) have been hired who come to us direct from the USA.  Both have impressive Southern BBQ resumes as they earnt their stripes deep in the Louisiana Bayou.  The Pork Rib recipe has received a makeover after significant testing and the Beef Brisket guarantees 18 hours of slow cooked goodness!

Smokin Sounds is a family event and all kids are welcome. A special section will be set up for kids to watch DVDs and play games, etc.

Catherine Smibert

What some people are not aware of is Cath’s artistic flair – whether on stage singing or speaking, she’s at home.  She loves to paint and create beauty for people to be inspired as well.

Catherine Smibert

Catherine Smibert

Cath is known, where she has played, for her versatility and dynamic performance style which has taken her around the world.

Based in Europe for 6.5 years she fronted various Jazz, blues and Funk bands, held leading roles in a variety of touring musicals as well as co-ordinating opera and gospel music at the Vatican and key European Cathedral events.

Though having studied singing under a variety of European Gurus as well as training classically at Sydney’s Conservatorium of music, her natural ability for music was first fostered by her family and began creating a traditional soul, jazz and lyrical repertoire from the age of 5!

Originally trained as a pianist & violinist by Suzuki method, Catherine’s primary love is singing – and she does so with an ecclectic 5-octave range.

Cath also loves to pass on her secrets…

She was awarded Young Citizen of the Year on Australia Day 1998 after launching an initiative to train and motivate talented, yet underprivileged youth. The Parramatta Performing Arts Troupe successfully raised funds for other such youth and themselves as they showcased.

Cath has also trained people going into mission lands with basic vocal skills to enhance their appeal to underdeveloped communities.

Her volunteer work includes coordinating youth performing arts troupes for local government, UN youth leadership lecturing, crisis pregnancy counselling and fundraising events management for research into human trafficking.

Catherine’s passionate about many things and protecting our planet is one of them. That’s why she’s a member of Super Green Me. She also does this as the director of Catalyst Commedia which works on customised PR/ Marketing projects for non profit orgs.

She attended MacDonald Performing Arts College as a Dancer and Musician and has Degree in Media and Communications from Macquarie University (2001.) Her influences are varied but she has a special love of Eva Cassidy.

Alexis Nicole & The Missing Pieces

Alexis Nicole famously headlined the first ever Smokin’ Sounds festival in 2009!

She will be back in 2010 with a bigger and better sound.

“Mezmerising … A lyric and chordal mix that bursts with flavour, igniting the tastebuds of your soul!” Kat McCormack This is how one of Alexis Nicole’s many fans describes her unique sound (see here). But, like her sound, the uniqueness of her personal appeal completes the package. Alexis Nicole is the real deal. Composing pieces since she was big enough to play guitar at the age of 6, her work ‘No Justice’ was picked up by radio stations at the ripe old age of 9. Always working to reach the listener where they are at, Alexis blends in her proficiencies with guitar and drums, to add an extra layer to the raw passion behind her vocals. She presents courage and vulnerability to her art all at once – all to deliver an experience of pure music and prolific writing, with a determination to bring back a fusion of indie folk, alternative and gyspy genres. 15 was an age that represented a turning point in the composition of the songs Alexis wrote, with ‘Stolen Moments’ born out of further understandings of inter-cultural relativism and ‘Strength Decides’ acting as an anthem for her peers that had lost their sense of self. She also released her first Album, ‘Zenith’. At 16 she performed as the key international act at the Unity Music Awards held in Ohio, USA. She was encouraged to return to the USA a year later on tour. Her encounters through this time are noteworthy … not to mention the interest shown by many local crowd around Ohio, Nashville and California. Also with an opportunity to play as a guest artist at Ben Harper’s famous family bohemiam music store in Claremont, California where she spent time writing one of her many songs, ‘Perfect Lover’. There was still a lot of the world to see however, and Alexis continued to pursue her thirst to understand more of the world so her observations could supply fodder for her writing. After heading to Europe, her song ‘Treasure of Reality’ was targeted by Italian film-makers who requested to use the piece in their documentaries. She was instantly featured on a variety of network media channel and gained a fan-base here quickly. Back in Australia, while Sydney born, Alexis knew that she had to best comprehend the day-by-day nature of her art and travelled to Melbourne where she has been furthering her research into the heart of our Austalian culture and the entire music scene. She personally produced her 2nd Album during this time, ‘Optimistic You’, named after the title track which sold out upon launch. Armed with a better experience in the marketplace, Alexis is embarking on the release of her new Independent Music Label, LXS Independent, L: Life | X: Xcess | S: Soul, whilst continuing to work on her own music career. Also, now with her band The Missing Pieces, a talented group of gents backing her, she and the boys will go on to create new and fresh sounds for the music lovers out there that crave raw and relatable music. So do not miss out and stay tuned for Alexis Nicole and her upcoming launches!!

Introducing Andrew Lowden!

http://www.myspace.com/ajlowden

Hailing from Byron Bay, on the East Coast of Australia, Andrew grew up in the cathartic/bohemian lifestyle of the region. It’s growing up in this earthy atmosphere that he developed his love for music and connecting with people through song. From an early age he picked up as many instruments as he could, and is constantly developing them, the most notable of these being the piano, tin whistle and his 5 octave vocal range. Having travelled the world at the age of 22 in search of new styles of music to fuse with his own, Andrew’s music is a poignant blend of musical expression, conveying immediately recognisable emotions through an array of musical genres as wide as his vocal range. His lyrical rawness and melodic currents reflect a musical, emotional and cultural understanding beyond his years. Pushing boundaries and testing new waters are trademarks of his that are often comforting, intriguing and confronting. This combined with his quirky sense of humour, is what makes his music a rhapsodic journey of sentiment and catharses. ‘A vibrant life that breathes fresh air and colour into the music industry!’
